What Is Self-hosted WordPress?

and how is it different from WordPress.com?

Summary

If you you’re on WordPress.com then read this to make sure you have made the right choice for your site.

WordPress is undoubtedly the best platform for running a blog! You may not know that there are actually 2 different versions of WordPress. One is called WordPress.com and the other is called WordPress.org.

What Is WordPress Actually?

To create a blog or a website, you need a system to organize all of your pages, content, and media. This is exactly what WordPress was designed to do. It is capable of creating any kind of website from a simple blog to a full-featured business website. WordPress can even be used to create an online store that accepts payments.

WordPress started in 2003 and is run by a company called Automattic. Today, WordPress is the platform of choice for over 34% of all Internet websites. It comes in two versions: (1) the fully hosted WordPress.com, and (2) what is called the ‘Self-hosted’ version, available on WordPress.org – Both of which are run and owned by the same WordPress company.

What Is WordPress.com?

In 2005, two years after the WordPress platform was created, WordPress.com was introduced. WordPress.com provides a convenient and easy way for you to setup a free blog that runs on the WordPress.com domain and hosting infrastructure. However, many WordPress features and functionality are not enabled on the free WordPress.com plan. Instead, to access all features, you will need to upgrade to a paid WordPress.com plan.

If you simply want a small personal blog for friends and family to use, then WordPress.com is the right choice for you. It is free to sign-up and super easy to get started.

However, if your intent is to build a site for serious blogging, to upload designs, to build a brand or business, to sell products, or you know you want full access to all features of WordPress, then you should consider being Self-hosted. In addition to getting unlimited access to all WordPress features, it is also much less expensive.

The Superior Alternative Is Called Self-hosting

Self-hosted WordPress is simply taking the WordPress software and installing it on your own host. This means you get full access to all the features and functionalities of WordPress which would otherwise require increasingly expensive paid subscriptions on WordPress.com.

The 2 most important features of going Self-hosted are that you are able to use custom designs and plugins! This means that when you find a design anywhere on the Internet (or from a custom developer), you can easily add it to your Self-hosted blog without any trouble. On WordPress.com, you are not able to do this because you can ONLY choose from their selection of designs.

We recommend that anyone from beginner to experienced blogger get Self-hosted instead of staying on the limited WordPress.com plans. This way you can still use your domain, you can install and use any blog design you want, you don’t have any forced ads on your blog, and, most importantly, you get access to all features of the Business Plan from WordPress.com

These features include:

  • Custom Domain Name
  • Live Chat Support
  • Upload Themes
  • Install Plugins
  • Advanced Design Customization
  • Unlimited Storage Space
  • Monetize Your Site
  • SEO Tools for better rankings
  • Google Analytics Integration
  • Sell products directly on your site!

And many more!

How To Self-host WordPress

You probably didn’t know about all this when you originally started your blog – and that’s okay! Most people don’t! But wouldn’t you rather be Self-hosted now that you know?

To get started, you only thing you need to find is a webhost that offers WordPress. Luckily that won’t be a problem as there are hundreds of hosting companies that suport WordPress! It is very common for hosting companies to include a “one-click” WordPress installer for free – you literally only need to click on a button to get WordPress setup for you. The prices for hosting range between $2.95 – $9.95 or higher for specialized plans, but this is still much cheaper than using the premium plans on WordPress.com.

As far as choosing a host, we highly recommend SiteGround for several reasons.

The main reason that SiteGround is officially recommended by WordPress! This is significant since they recommend them without receiving compensation! Typically when someone recommends a product, they are often affiliated with them – this is not the case here! They simply get the recommendation because they are truly a GREAT host!
